In a significant move to strengthen India’s AI ecosystem, Google Cloud has announced the expansion of its AI infrastructure in India, while backing a pioneering initiative by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. The partnership supports AI4Bharat, an open-source platform focused on building and evaluating Indian-language AI models tailored to the country’s linguistic diversity and local use cases.
The collaboration is designed to enhance data residency, enable responsible AI research, and accelerate AI adoption across India’s academic, startup, and enterprise communities. By leveraging Google Cloud’s scalable infrastructure, researchers and innovators will be able to train and deploy advanced language models more efficiently and securely.
Mitesh Khapra, Associate Professor at IIT Madras and Co-lead of AI4Bharat, said:
“At AI4Bharat, our mission is to build AI for India’s specific needs technology that understands our languages, cultures, and contexts. Google Cloud’s infrastructure support strengthens our ability to scale, benchmark, and democratize Indian-language AI models for real-world impact.”
This initiative marks another step in Google Cloud’s ongoing commitment to supporting India’s digital transformation, helping enterprises, developers, and academic institutions tap into the potential of AI innovation made in India, for India.
