YouTube just changed monetisation rules: Here’s what YouTubers need to know

Share

YouTube is rewriting the rules of the creator economy, and from July 15, the platform will begin enforcing stricter monetisation policies that put a spotlight on quality, originality, and value. While the rise of AI has enabled a wave of fast, low-cost content production, YouTube is drawing a clear line: mass-produced, low-effort, or AI-generated content without meaningful transformation will no longer earn ad revenue even if the channel qualifies for the Partner Program. This means that AI voiceovers with no added commentary, repetitive slideshow compilations, or surface-level reaction formats are now at serious risk of demonetisation.

But this isn’t an outright rejection of AI it’s a call for responsible, creative use of technology. Content that blends AI tools with genuine commentary, education, storytelling, or unique perspective will remain monetisable. Put simply, YouTube wants to reward creators who put in the effort to engage, inform, and entertain, not those chasing shortcuts. Enforcement will rely on a mix of AI detection and human review, and penalties could escalate from demonetised videos to full removal from the YouTube Partner Program, or in extreme cases, suspension.

For creators, the message is clear: originality is currency. In an era where audiences are drowning in content, what stands out isn’t what can be mass-produced, but what carries an authentic voice, thoughtful perspective, and real value.

This new chapter is less about limiting creators and more about protecting the ecosystem ensuring that YouTube remains a platform where creativity is rewarded, trust is maintained, and meaningful content thrives. For creators ready to lean into originality, the opportunity has never been greater.
