In a major push to expand its footprint in one of its fastest-growing markets, OpenAI has announced that its ChatGPT Go plan will be available free for 12 months in India. With over 29 million downloads in just 90 days, India stands as OpenAI’s second-largest user base, yet app monetisation remains limited. This initiative aims to boost user retention, expand AI accessibility, and accelerate paid adoption ahead of the upcoming Bengaluru DevDay Exchange a key event for OpenAI’s growing developer community in India.

Nick Turley, Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, said, “Since launching ChatGPT Go in India a few months ago, the adoption and creativity from our users have been inspiring. We’re excited to see the amazing things our users will build, learn, and achieve with these tools.”

By removing the entry barrier, OpenAI is not only empowering millions of Indian users to explore AI-driven productivity and learning, but also reinforcing India’s role as a critical hub for generative AI innovation. The move positions ChatGPT Go as an everyday digital companion from students and creators to professionals and startups strengthening OpenAI’s long-term engagement in the market.
