In a decisive step to reinforce its foothold in one of the world’s most vibrant digital markets, YouTube has appointed Gunjan Soni as its new Country Managing Director for India, entrusting her with the mission of accelerating creator growth, elevating user engagement, and spearheading innovation across the platform’s expansive local ecosystem. With over 20 years of cross-industry leadership spanning e-commerce, media, technology, and consulting, Soni brings a rare combination of strategic vision and operational expertise that will guide YouTube through its next phase of expansion in India.
Prior to her new role, Soni spent six transformative years as Group CEO at ZALORA in Singapore, where she successfully diversified product offerings, pioneered personalized shopping experiences, and launched a robust loyalty program that significantly boosted customer retention. Her earlier tenures as Executive Vice President at Star India, Chief Marketing Officer at Myntra, and Partner in McKinsey & Company’s Consumer & Marketing practice have honed her ability to drive strategic growth and build global brands. This depth of experience uniquely positions her to navigate the intersection of content, commerce, and community that defines YouTube’s platform.
“YouTube’s journey in India continues to be vibrant and dynamic, representing a country filled with immense creative energy and potential,” said Gautam Anand, Vice President of YouTube APAC. “Gunjan’s deep understanding of the creator economy and India’s video commerce landscape, combined with her leadership, will enable us to unlock new opportunities, deepen community engagement, and contribute meaningfully to India’s digital journey.” Echoing this optimism, Soni shared, “I’m honored to join YouTube India at a time when video consumption is reshaping how people learn, shop, and connect. My focus will be on empowering creators, enriching viewer experiences, and driving sustainable growth for brands on our platform.”
In addition to her operational prowess, Soni also enriches YouTube’s leadership bench with corporate governance experience from her role on the board of CBRE Group, a Fortune 500 company. Under her guidance, YouTube India is expected to roll out enhanced creator programs, leverage data-driven insights for advertisers, and explore innovative formats in shopping, education, and virtual events—ensuring the platform remains at the cutting edge of digital experience.
As digital video consumption in India continues its meteoric rise—with millions of daily viewers and thousands of creators carving out thriving communities—Gunjan Soni’s appointment marks a pivotal moment for YouTube India. Her blend of strategic acumen, marketing expertise, and passion for innovation will not only harness the country’s creative talent but also fortify YouTube’s competitive edge in the rapidly evolving global digital landscape.
